Gretchen Elise: Are You Ready?
Are You Ready? (©2004 MusicalSolutions/BMI) is the debut CD of original compositions by Boston-based vocalist Gretchen Elise. Defying categorization, it is danceable music with a message—sometimes political, sometimes personal. A mix of R&B, jazz, Caribbean and Brazilian grooves provide a basis for catchy melodies with lyrical beauty. The title track, a mellow Dancehall-style collaboration with Boston Reggae singer Lady Lee, sets the tone for the album: it grabs the listeners' ear immediately, hinting at cross-over appeal in a multitude of genres, including R&B, Urban, World, Contemporary Jazz, and Adult Contemporary. Gretchen Elise wanted to hear her original cross-genre compositions played in collaboration with Boston’s best musicians. The result, guided by producer/pianist Mark Shilansky, is a CD of songs that are compositionally rich, appealing to sophisticated musicians, young and mature people alike.
