DRUM LOGIC: MUSIC, MATH, AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
WHAT IS DRUM LOGIC?
The Drum Logic project combines music, math and youth development for middle-school aged Out-of-School Time (OST)students.
HOW IS IT DONE?
Through the engaging, hands-on process of making drums, students experience key math concepts of measurement, estimation, and problem-solving. Students develop skills in drumming and draw connections between rhythms and their cultural origins. In turn, students navigate the class, and mentor others in the Drum Logic process. The 12-week unit is team taught by an Afterschool teacher, a music specialist, and an intern from a local music conservatory.
WHERE IS IT HAPPENING?

Drum Logic emerged in November 2003 as part of the 21st Century Community Learning
Centers Partnership in Cambridge, MA, a collaborative effort to promote fun,
engaging learning experiences in Out-of-School Time programs, create bridges
between school and Afterschool. As of Spring 2005, Drum Logic is underway
at four Cambridge, MA OST programs, and at the Academy of the Pacific Rim
in Boston, MA.
WHAT DOES IT CONNECT TO?
Drum Logic embraces concepts of experiential learning, multiple intelligences, metacognition, youth development, and multicultural education. Drum Logic connects engaging Afterschool culture with in-school learning. Drum Logic has been informed by research and curricula from MusicalSolutions, the Algebra Project, Inc., and New England Conservatory’s Music-in-Education program, as well as Harvard University Graduate School of Education’s Arts in Education program.
HOW DO I FIND OUT MORE?
We’d love to show you the video produced by students and staff, and find out how our youth can teach you drumming and drum-making. Please contact Program Coordinator Gretchen Elise Iversen Gretchen@musicalsolutions.org or Khari Milner, 21st Century Manager kmilner@cpsd.ma.us
